Claire’s scenography incorporates found-space, audience immersive settings, and upcycled materials to produce designs that are environmentally conscious and visually compelling. She specializes in the unusual, the forgotten, and the misunderstood. She likes to fix things that are broken, to find things that are trash and give them new life. She mostly keeps her work to small, independent projects with thematic content that personally resonates with her.

She holds a BA Honors from Dalhousie in Technical Scenography (2009) where she studied under Peter Perina, who taught her that designs should be “visual poetry” for the stage. Later, she went on to complete a Masters in Theatre History from the University of Victoria (2012) supervised by Dr. Jennifer Wise and Dr. Anthony Vickery, where her main focus in Canadian Theatre was around the artistic infrastructure boom of the Centennial and artistic manifestations of national identity. Other obsessive interests at the time included the Bauhaus, Worker’s theatre, theatre architecture, and the all encompassing personal quest to understand why the Canadian theatre system is so complexly weird. A few years later, she went back to school to pursue her passion for design, and was an MFA candidate at York in Sustainable Design for Theatre (2015) under Teresa Pryzbylski and Ian Garrett. She approached this time to learn about the practice and application of emerging initiatives in the implementation of conservation geared towards waste reduction and energy conservation in theatres- or how to be less wasteful.

Other jack of all trade occupations have included scenic carpenter, technician, administrator, venue operator, and currently a manager at Thunder Thighs Costumes in Leslieville.

In her spare time she loves to garden, paint, play with cats, and is trying to complete the Cannonball Read, a challenge to read 52 books over the year. You can find her reviews under the handle Claire Badger.
